This page shows only the four old Hangul letters left off the pronunciation chip. They are not forbidden sounds. They stay off the chip because they are rare, hard to type, and heavy for a first lesson.

These letters are not put back on the chip. If a glyph breaks, the note stays on this page.

An ㅇ with a tick is yeong (/ŋ/). An everyday /ŋ/ coda stays ㅇ. ㆁ appears only in a contrast.

  1. To separate /ŋ/ from /ŋg/. singer is /ŋ/, finger is /ŋg/.
  2. Word-initial /ŋ/, as in Nguyen and Chinese or Vietnamese ng-.
  3. Only when correcting the habit of splitting ng into ㄴㄱ. A clear /ŋ/ coda stays ㅇ.
